Thomas Henry’s was purpose built by Joseph Burlington for his sister, Matilda. The bluestone was quarried locally by her husband, Thomas Henry Smith and carted to the site by horse and dray.
Matilda and Thomas Henry Smith called the property Burlington House and opened for business as a guesthouse in September, 1936. Superb hospitality and Matilda’s fine cooking using vegetables grown by her husband on the block next door resulted in a well earned reputation as one of the best guesthouses along the south coast.
Burlington House remained in the family until 1974 when it became a private home and a Dental Surgery.
In January 1986 with new owners and a new name, Thomas Henry’s, the property once again established an excellent reputation - this time as bed and breakfast accommodation with a licensed restaurant.
Today the hospitality, furnishings and atmosphererecall the very best of the guesthouse era in one of South Australia’s loveliest and most historic regions.
